December 13 – Action When it comes to aspirations, it’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen. What’s your next step? (Author: Scott Belsky)

chai.
My next step will be making this into a cup of tea.

December 10 – Wisdom — What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out? (Author: Susannah Conway)
HOT POT!
I don’t keep a running tally of smart decisions I make. The wisest thing recently decided was to get the full spicy broth in our hot pot at Lao Sze Chuan. Closely following in wise moves was the company (hi Patterson, Felicia, Pone & Luke!) and the decision to stuff ourselves silly.

lava.

food stuffs to be placed in the lava.

meat & unused sauces.

fish, veggies & goodies.

two platters of meat, fish, veggies & noodles and three broth refills later.
Last time we got the half & half.

half and half.
Full spicy is the way to go.

Prompt: Party. What social gathering rocked your socks off in 2010? Describe the people, music, food, drink, clothes, shenanigans. (Author: Shauna Reid)
I threw Patterson a beer tasting birthday party.

the birthday boy
Bring a 6 pack of good beer & try some new beer,

the beer
eat some food,

the food
laugh,

(some of) the people
look at Carlin,

the cat
repeat. Good times were had by all.

December 6 – Make. What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it? (Author: Gretchen Rubin)

I've even packed this moka pot & taken it on trips with us. Along with a bag of Intelligentsia, of course.
Today we ate a slew of things in the fridge that were already made. So the last thing I made was my coffee this morning. Which is a ritual in and of itself. Now’s as good a time as any to admit this. I love coffee more than most things and people in this world. It’s ugly. Years ago I discovered the moka pot and haven’t looked back. My drip coffee maker went into a cabinet & hasn’t been pulled out since. I should probably get rid of it, but I know as soon as I do I’ll have a slew of guests over that all want coffee at once.
The other little thing pictured along with my precious moka pot & grinder is a Vietnamese coffee maker. If you’ve never had a Vietnamese iced coffee you’re missing out on a divine little treat of chicory coffee & sweetened condensed milk. Try it next time you have the chance. Goes very well with a bahn mi. Nhu Lan can expose you to the delights of both.

Isn't this just the cutest french press you've ever seen?
At a friend’s house last night he made me a cup of coffee in this. The tiniest french press on the planet. I squealed with glee. SO CUTE!

December 5 – Let Go. What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why? (Author: Alice Bradley)

I’ve let go of the notion that I don’t like barbecue. While I can’t do an “All You Can Eat” ribs night without leaving the first plate unfinished (I still maintain that’s a good thing), there’s some solid stuff out there. Looking forward to indulging in some real-deal stuff when we head to Alabama.

In a secular household? We are. This is how we do it. Sweet potato latkes and gumbo. Great dinner or the greatest dinner?

While the cheese, wine & swine is amazing, let’s not overlook their stunning vegetables. Like my favorite: the butternut squash. This reappearing on the menu makes the cold weather a bit easier to handle.

There are no two finer words in the English language than “encased meats” my friend.
Patterson & I had our friends Elwood & Sharon in town for a few days. We’d be terrible hosts if we didn’t take them to Hot Doug’s, right?
